The church is the UK's most famous terra cotta church, nicknamed "The Pot Church". It was the first of three "Pot Churches" designed by Edmund Sharpe, the others being at Platt Fields, Rusholme and Scotforth near Lancaster.
All the pew ends and backs are produced from terra cotta (Italian for Baked Earth) as are the carved decorations on the roof trusses. The font, pulpit and the altar have all been replaced but were also made of terra cotta originally.
