Adventures with Steel Wool

For this 'experiment' you will need -

Two people, preferably wearing dark clothes.
A camera firmly mounted on a solid tripod set to Manual Focus using the 'Bulb' setting to determine the length of time to set the exposure.

Torches (more than one)
Egg Whisk
Steel (wire) Wool
String
Matches - or better still a Blowtorch!

Place camera on tripod, using autofocus, focus on a spot about 20ft in front of camera (best to put a torch on the ground and focus on that). Once focus has been obtained, switch camera to Manual Focus (so it can't re-focus during the long exposure).

Whilst you are doing this, your mate is stuffing large amounts of Steel Wool into the egg whisk, packing it in tightly. When he has finished he will set fire to the Wool using the Blow torch then he will be stood on the spot where the torch is placed (so that he is in focus) and proceed to whizz it round vigorously in a circular motion, whilst the camera shutter is held open for 20-30 seconds until all the fire has been 'spent'. Then close the shutter. Be careful not to set fire to a nearby tree as we did during one exposure! Also wear a hat and gloves as a stray spark burnt my finger!
